Cross That Bridge

You often worry about many things, past, present, and future. Sometimes, you think, for good reason. Sometimes, you realize, the reason is not so great…but you can’t stop. Sometimes you need to be reminded to be brave and let go, to “cross that bridge when  you come to it.”

But it’s not always easy to not-worry. Because not worrying means knowing who is really in charge, and believing that He is trustworthy. That’s why it’s impossible to throw off your responsibilities and worries, unless you first put your trust in God.

Matthew 6:25-34

25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

28 And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “what shall we wear?” 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do  not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Luke 12:25-26

25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life/cubit to his height*? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Song Notes

You don’t remember exactly what inspired this song anymore, but you do remember the general location you were in (the forests of NorCar) when it first came to you.

It was a time when you worked harder than you ever had on your music, and there was something bizarrely satisfying about focusing and putting  your whole self into one pursuit.

Lyrics

I will cross that bridge when I come to it, when I come to it, when I come to it
I will cross that bridge when I come to it, so I won’t worry now

For it’s in the Father’s hands, anyway, anyway
For it’s in the Father’s hands, anyway
For it’s in the Father’s hands, anyway, anyway
For it’s in the Father’s hands, anyway

Who of you by worrying can add an inch to your height, can add a year to your life? You can’t, you can’t–
There are lots of things for you to pay attention to just for today,
Don’t worry ’bout tomorrow or fret over yesterday, just hear me now as I say:
