Have Mercy On Me O God (Psalm 51)

About

David is one of the most famous figures in the Bible and in history. The shepherd boy who killed a giant and became king later committed adultery and murder against one of his closest friends and most loyal murderers, and even though he repented, the ripple effects of his sin tore apart his family permanently.

But Psalm 51 is about David’s repentance. After the Prophet Nathan risked his life to confront the king over his great sin, David realized his wrong and turned back to God. In this Psalm you can hear his grief and sorrow over what he has done and his desire for God to forgive him and be reconciled.

Lyrics

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love
According to your great compassion
blot out, blot out my transgressions

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love
Wash away, wash away my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin

For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me

Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight

So that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge
Surely I was sinful at birth,
from the time I was conceived.

You are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge
Surely I was sinful at birth,
from the time I was conceived

Surely you desire truth in the inner parts,
you teach me wisdom in the inmost place
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I’ll be clean;
wash me, and whiter than snow I will be

Let me, oh let me hear joy and gladness
Let the bones you have crushed rejoice
Hide, Thee, your face from all my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
renew in me a steadfast spirit
Do not cast me from out your presence, Lord
or take your Holy Spirit from me

Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit,
to sustain me
Then I will teach transgressors of your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the one who saves me
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
Oh Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.

You do not delight in sacrifice,
or I would bring it, or I would bring it
You do not take pleasure in burnt offerings

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit
A broken and contrite heart O God, You won’t despise

In your good pleasure, make Zion prosper
build up the walls of Jerusalem
Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
whole burnt offerings to delight you
then bulls will be offered on your altar

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love
According to your great compassion
blot out, blot out my transgressions

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
Wash away, wash away my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin
And cleanse me from my sin

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.
