How Beautiful Your Tents

How does God feel about His people? What is God’s love like? Sometimes we might feel like God loves us not because he likes us but because He’s God and He has to. It’s his job description. His love is like a duty. I mean, look at us, we’re so messed up and unlovable.

But in this verse, when God through Balaam talks about Israel, one way you could interpret it is how God sees Israel as a beautiful, lovable people group that he really is fond of.

That’s, of course, just one interpretation. It could be something else, like God’s vision and hope for Israel’s future. They may be messed up and dirty now, but they have potential for beauty and goodness. What do you think?

Numbers 24:5

“How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel!

Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters. Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water. Their king will be greater than Agag, their kingdom will be exalted.

God brought them out of Egypt, they have the strength of a wild ox. They devour hostile nations and break their bones in pieces; with their arrows they pierce them. Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness–who dares to rouse them?

May those who bless you be blessed and those curse you be cursed!”

Song Notes

This is another one of those songs where I was just mindin’ my bizness, reading the Bible based on some kind of reading plan (real simple: start in Exodus and work your way through to Revelation, then come back around. Why Exodus? Because for some reason when I start at the beginning I never finish)…and then I read this verse and music started playing in my head. In this case, the melody for “How beautiful, your tents, O Jacob” that first verse, and the rhythm for the piano. And then I had to put in some work to get the rest of the passage to work with music, and here it is:

Lyrics

How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places (too), O Israel!
Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD

How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places (too), O Israel!
Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD

Like cedars ‘side the waters. Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water.
Their king will be greater than Agag, their kingdom will be exalted.

How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places (too), O Israel!
Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD

God brought them out of Egypt, they have the strength of a wild ox, devouring hostile nations and breaking their bones in pieces;
And with their arrows they pierce them. Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness–who dares to rouse them?

May those who bless you be blessed and those curse you be cursed–
May those who bless you be blessed; who curse, be cursed!

How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places (too), O Israel!
Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD.
