The verses of this song come from the book of Jeremiah, where the Weeping Prophet is warning the Israelites living in Judah to flee Jerusalem, because God’s wrath is about to come upon them. He blames the leaders of the people who falsely tell the people that nothing’s wrong and disaster is not imminent.
In other words: Beware of false prophets.
From the greatest to the least, they are greedy for gain
All the prophets and priests alike
They all practice deceit, and they dress the wounds of my people
as though it were not serious, they say:
Peace, peace, when there is no peace
Are they not ashamed of their loathsome conduct?
No they have no shame at all, they don’t even know how to blush
So they will fall among the fallen and they will be brought down
They will fall among the fallen when I punish them, says the Lord
