Right Now

In many modern American churches, it seems we often talk about God’s goodness toward us, but fail to mention our obligation to obey Him.

With reason, of course. There are people who understand “obedience” from a legalistic standpoint, turning it into pharaseeism, hypocrisy, and salvation-by-works. That is terribly wrong.

Yet equally bad is the idea that loving God means paying Him lip service without living our lives in a way that pleases Him…not because we’re trying to earn favor or salvation, but because we appreciate Him so much we want to do things that make Him happy. Willingly.

But, let’s face it. It’s not easy to obey God, a lot of the times. Really not easy. Sometimes we need a reminder and perhaps even a stubborn, focused attitude to obey in spite of the temptations, the anti-theistic philosophies, the pain and the boredom and the questions, even. Sometimes (not all the time, and not in every situation, but sometimes) it helps to have a little ditty to encourage ourselves, like Thomas the Engine’s “I think I can, I think I can…”

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Song Notes

You were thinking about how it can be so hard to obey the Lord in some issues, even when you know you need to.

You wondered, wouldn’t it be a little helpful if you could have a little encouraging song to sing under your breath to remind yourself and motivate yourself to do what needs to be done?

Kind of like railroad workers and soldiers sing songs to pass the time, march in step, lift their spirits, etc, etc?

Just something simple, catchy, and a little repetitive to make sure the message sticks? …and so this song was born:

Lyrics

Right now I’ll be brave for the Lord, obey the Lord, and say the Lord is good
No matter what I want or how I feel this choice alone is real
No devil, self, or peer or friend can dissuade me from this end
I must obey, I will obey and ’til it’s done I sing again:

I’ll be brave for the Lord, obey the Lord, and say the Lord is good
No matter what I want or how I feel His voice alone is real
No devil, self, or peer or friend can dissuade me from this end
I must obey, I will obey and ’til it’s done I sing again

Right now I’ll be brave for the Lord, obey the Lord, and say the Lord is good
No matter what I want or how I feel this choice alone is real
No devil, self, or peer or friend can dissuade me from this end
I must obey, I will obey and ’til it’s done I’ll sing again…
