This is What I Want

CS Lewis once said: “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, thy will be done, and those to whom God says, in the end, Thy will be done.”

That’s meant to be a scary quote. Those who have their way choose to break away from God, the source of life and love and all things good, meaning they condemn themselves to death and hatred and all things evil. And this doesn’t just happen “in the end,” but in bits and pieces throughout our lives.

Many people claim to want to know God’s will, but do we really? What if the answer isn’t what we want to hear? Instead of asking for God’s will, then, perhaps it’s wiser to ask for the willingness to enact His will…

Matthew 6:10

Your kingdom come, your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.

Luke 22:42-44

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done”…and being in anguish, [Jesus] prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Song Notes

Life would be SO much easier if our desires exactly matched the Lords. But sadly, they do not. Jesus sets a hard example when he asked for “the cup” of crucifixion to be taken from him, yet ended with “your will be done.”

I’ll be honest, I can’t bring myself to do that. I don’t know what God requires of me, but I have a feeling it’s more than I want to give, and that’s one reason I’m stuck. Hence, the song:

Lyrics

This is what I want, but what is it you want, Lord?
Help me to accept it with joy
All I am is yours, and what you’ve giv’n is mine, Lord
Help me always make the better choice

Sometimes what you want is really not what I want
Still we’re to pray, “Your will be done.”
When the things I want oppose the things that you want,
May my wishes with yours be one.

We can’t always see how things work together
So we hold on to our plans, do what we want to do
Only you can see what is really better than our wants
For you know what is best, and we’re to trust in you

This is what I want, but what is it you want, Lord?
In the end, I know there are joys
When we follow you, do what you want to do, Lord
Help us always make the better choice
