Growing up can be hard. There are some kids who look forward to it, and others who don’t. I was the latter kind of kid. Still am, sadly. But as I was thinking about this, this motif came to my mind. Used it to explore a few ideas about growing up, what it means, what it costs. Song is slightly repetitive, but there it is for now. A song on behalf on Peter Pan wannabes.
What does it take to grow up? What does it take to stop
Living a life full of childish dreams, childish wants for childish things?
We need more people grown up, not those who’ve reached an age
People who live not just for themselves, authentically, not on a stage.
What does it take to grow up? Responsibility.
Total surrender to God above is how we’re truly free.
But we turn back from our every chance
If we have a choice, we’re all Peter Pans
And we’re fearful of a future where
We are in control, but we have to bear
Society’s expectations, its censure if we fail
God’s wounds, Satan’s deceptions when we just want to bail
A milquetoast generation, afraid to stop or go
But if we keep on hiding, just how are we to grow?

You can remove all my selfish fears, strengthen me and dry my tears
To the world I’ll be grown up, yet still a child of God
