Where Can I Hide My Heart?

Life ain’t ideal, we know that. A lot of people in the society I live in like to talk about “being true to yourself, no matter what others think,” but for most folks, that’s simply unrealistic. We care too much what others think of us, and we love-hate ourselves, and that’s reality. It’s not even clear whether or not not-caring about others’ opinions is a good thing or not.

Other people can’t fully understand us, nor do we want them to. And if they saw everything about us, they wouldn’t be able to stand it. So we keep hiding parts of ourselves from each other, for survival reasons.

Perhaps the only person in the universe we can be nakedly honest in front of is God.

Song Notes

Came up with this song while journaling in the bathroom during my long 2018 stints. I think. And was thinking about politeness, political correctness, and how we (or at least I) feel so…inauthentic all the time. Perhaps it’s not that true, but feels like there’s no one to trust who will understand me in all my messed-up-ness  without turning away. And was thinking, I can’t  be the only one like that…thus, this song:

Lyrics

Where can I hide my heart?
Is there a place, it won’t fall apart?
Is there a way to keep it from harm,
from this aching pain, a safer place?

Where can I doff this mask?
Keeping it on is too great a task
Is it too much to ask
for a guarantee — you won’t betray me?

Inauthenticity
keeps the world running, though we’re never free
Trying so hard to be
good when we’re bad, happy when sad

Where can I hide my heart?
Is there a place, it won’t fall apart?
Is there a way to keep it from harm,
from this aching pain, a safer place?

Where can I doff this mask?
Keeping it on is too great a task
Is it too much to ask
for a space where we can simply be

without fear or false laughter,
where tears can flow after
we speak all our deep secrets
may I keep this wish?
That such things exist?

If only we could be
our truest selves, yet happy and free
Why do we hurt so desperately
trying so to keep
smiling when we want to weep?

Where can I hide my heart?
Is there a place, it won’t fall apart?
Is there a way to keep it from harm,
from this aching pain, a safer place…for us?
